A brown Ceramic coin or medal commemorating Martin Luther.
Dated 1983 and issued by the City of Erfurt, East Germany. The year 1983 was the 500th Anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther, who was born in 1483. Martin Luther graduated from the University of Erfurt with a Masters Degree in 1505. Martin Luther is of course an iconic figure of the Protestant Reformation. In 1510 Martin Luther visited Rome as a Catholic Monk. That visit was a crucial one in the life of Martin Luther. On the obverse side the coin has an image of Martin Luther and the words Martin Luther Ehrung Der DDR 1983. On the reverse side is an image of a church or cathedral and the words Collegium Maius Erfurt Anno 1510.
The medal is in very good condition and is housed in its original cloth covered wooden box. The initials DDR stand for Deutsche Demokratische Republik, which was the name of East Germany . On the lid of the case are the words Martin Luther Ehrung 1983 der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik. Then below that are the words Rat der Stadt Erfurt , which means City Council Erfurt ( Erfurt , East Germany)
