Description
“Oaken Chair brought over by Gov. Carver in the MayFlower 1620”.
This bookmark was found in this rare 1791 Isaiah Thomas Bible.
The Bible is now owned by a museum in New York.
18th century, possibly earlier, hard to put an exact date on it. – John Carver was one of the Pilgrims who braved the Mayflower voyage in 1620 which resulted in the creation of Plymouth Colony in America. When the Pilgrims made the decision to begin moving their church to somewhere in America, they sent John Carver and Robert Cushman as their representatives to England to negotiate with the Virginia Company and organize the business. Carver came on the Mayflower, where he acted as governor on the ship for the voyage. After arrival, he was elected governor of the Colony, and remained in that capacity until his untimely death from an apparent heat-stroke in April 1621.
This is a great piece of Americana.
